This reservation was founded in 2000, in order to protect bears from abuse. The name comes from a combination of the words liberty and bear.
For many years in Romania it was legal to own a bear, and cases of abuse were frequent. The creators of this sanctuary strive to provide an outdoor haven for these mistreated animals. There are 56 European brown bears and one Asiatic black bear who roam freely throughout the 60 hectares of the reservation.
The organization differs from a zoo, in which their main goal is not to attract visitors, but to protect the mistreated bears and help them return to a normal life. However, it is possible to arrange a visit to the reservation with a group.
